Banyuwangi is town vocated in East Java Province. Long time ago, in a kingdom, there was a king who had a docile servant named sidopekso. Sidopekso had a very beautiful wife. the wife, however was an ordinary woman that sidopokso's mother didn't like her.
One day, the king ordered sidopekso to pick a flower up on the top of mount Ijen. Sidopekso followed whatever duty assigned to him by the king. thus, he went to mount ijen.
At that time, sidopekso's wife was pregnant. she gave birth a baby before sidopekso came back from the mountain. them, sidopekso's mother stole her baby & threw it to the river. sidopekso's wife of course was very shocked knowing that her baby had been stolen.
As sidopekso arrived at home, his mother said to him that his wife had thrown his baby to the river. sidopekso was angry with his wife. when his wife was asked by sidopekso about the baby, his wife answered that she didn't know anything about the baby. She then went to river and threw herslelf into the river to prove that she had told the truth. Suddenly, from the water, there turned up two white blooming flowers, one of them was big and another was small. Finally, both flowera disappered into the river. the smell of the flowers which was fragrant made the river fragnant. that was why the place where this river was located named Banyuwangi or "fragnant water".
